"Way Down In The Hole"

When you walk through the garden
you gotta watch your back
well I beg your pardon
walk the straight and narrow track
if you walk with Jesus
he's gonna save your soul
you gotta keep the devil
way down in the hole

he's got the fire and the fury
at his command
well you don't have to worry
if you hold on to Jesus hand
we'll all be safe from Satan
when the thunder rolls
just gotta help me keep the devil
way down in the hole

All the angels sing about Jesus' mighty sword
and they'll shield you with their wings
and keep you close to the lord
don't pay heed to temptation
for his hands are so cold
you gotta help me keep the devil
way down in the hole

Tom Waits is one of my favourite singers. I do not believe he is Christian but a lot of his songs have Christian focus and perhaps he is. Only God knows.

I chose one of his songs for tonight’s theme: keeping the devil way down in the hole.

And I want to consider how to do that.  Tom himself gives us the overall answer:

if you walk with Jesus, he's gonna save your soul

if you hold on to Jesus hand, we'll all be safe from Satan, when the thunder rolls

I want to suggest that there are 4 ways in which we can keep the devil out of our lives and back down in his hole.

The first and most important is to put God first.

Proverbs 3:6 TLB says In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.

The devil will always try to claim authority over your life; he will claim that he is in charge; he will try to distract you from putting God first in every area of your life. He will lie and cheat and make shallow promises and half-truths to distract you. He knows your weaknesses and will try and exploit them, then he can live up to his name of the accuser (which is what Ha-satan means), and will try and pull you down.

Another of my favourite singers Bob Dylan sung in his song Man of Peace:

You know sometimes Satan, you know he comes as a man of peace. He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue. He knows every song of love that ever has been sung

Well, he catch you when you're hoping for a glimpse of the sun; Catch you when your troubles feel like they weigh a ton

He knows just where to touch you honey, and how you like to be kissed,

So, in order to keep the devil out of our lives, we need to put God first in everything that we do. God will give us the direction that we need in order to achieve what He has called us to do.

Whenever God is on the center of everything we do in life, the devil has no room to get it in. In God you are safe and protected.

We keep close to God in 3 ways:

Pray without ceasing:

Time spent in God’s presence is better than a thousand times elsewhere

Psalm 84:10 says: Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

Prayer protects us from the tactics of the devil. Prayer gives us clarity and discernment over situations in our lives.

Sometimes when we fall into situations and get hurt, it’s been because we were not covered in prayer and so we were an easy target to the enemy.

So always stay prayerful in all seasons and situations so you can be protected by God.

Remember the devil is roaring around looking for whom he might devour or destroy but you can keep him out of your life through prayer.

Jesus in his final prayer for his disciples, prayed: My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. (John 17:15)

Plead the blood of Jesus over your life:

God showed us how much He loved us by sacrificing His only son Jesus who died on the cross and shed His precious blood so that He could be our covering… (John 3:16).

When you plead the blood of Jesus over our life we are cleansed from all sin. Jesus’ blood shields and covers us and protects us from the devil and all evil.

Revelation 12:11 “And they overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony …”

Read the word of God daily:

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart…..

God’s word is powerful and it changes situations in our lives for the best when we read it daily. It will transform us from the inside out. It’s a powerful weapon against the devil. God’s word provides us the tools we need to destroy the enemy. So, read God’s word daily and your life will be transformed and always protected. God will pour His wisdom and knowledge to guide you on your path and in all you do.

Stay motivated and inspired, know this:  if God is for you no one or no devil in hell will come against you. Victory is yours in Jesus name.

I want to give you a bookmark, designed by a local woman concerned because we are not covered in prayer and we have not taken the power we have been given by God and used it against the enemy to destroy his strongholds.

The final words in Tom’s song:

don't pay heed to temptation
for his hands are so cold
you gotta help me keep the devil
way down in the hole

We have a role in keeping the devil down.  Jesus said: “greater things will you do”;

he says that we can stand on the devil and not get hurt – we have that power;

we can invoke his name to make demons flee;

we have the authority of Christ in our lives, use it!

Together we can keep the devil way down in the hole.

Let’s play that song again…
